German´s icon was the famous Volkswagen Escarabajo; Francia and its promise Citroën 2CV; England and its small and cute Mini, Italy proud of its Fiat 500 and Spain did have the distinctive SEAT 600. The SEAT 600 constituted a revolution that powered the Spanish country, becoming an icon which wrote a part of the automotive history, creating a new way of working and entertainment for the mid-sized class and meant an improvement in the Spanish Society´s standard of living and independence. Even, it was the best meeting point for the youngest generations.

In 1957, the production of the SEAT 600 was started and its initial price was fixed at 390.-€ (65.000 pta.), increasing at 465.-€ (77.291 pta.) in 1.973 – when its production came to end. Between 1957 and 1973, over 780.000 units were produced. It was said that the useful life of the Seat 600 was around 100.000 km

Nowadays, this over-60-years old model has been revalued whose current market value is around 4.000-5.000.-€, even may reach as much as 15.000.-€ for some special ABARTH editions, ready for competition. Regarding the market value, besides of being a very distinctive old car, you also need to be aware that there is also an emotional factor, which is the sentimental value that owners give to their Seat 600 – this is the result of so many years of adventures together.

Have you ever heard of the song “Adelante hombre del 600” – Go ahead, 600-man – composed by the journalist, writer, comedian, and musician Moncho Alpuente? This song is a tribute for the great success of the SEAT 600. I would really recommend you to listen to it. (Sorry for those who cannot understand Spanish, but the rhythm is anyways nice! :p)

I do have great news for all the SEAT 600 lovers. The tentacles of the electric vehicles have also reached the classic SEAT 600, under the name of “Little Electric Cars e601“. It is a Galician company called “Little Electric Cars” which has conducted the project of electrifying the traditional SEAT 600.

As I said, the name of the vehicle will be Little e601 and not SEAT e600, as it was said at the beginning of the project, since SEAT has personally reminded Little Electric Cars to not to use the word SEAT as well as the number 600 to commercialize this new vehicle – as long as the Galician company does not want to have any problems with Volkswagen group, firm that is now owner of the former Spanish company.

Do not be impatient please, we will talk about the price right away! The Galician company has confirmed that just the conversion kit will exceed the amount of 30.000.-€, price which does not include neither the base SEAT 600 vehicle (and a possible restoration) nor the necessary expenses related to the labor force and homologation of the small “Pelotilla” – colloquial name as Spanish people used to refer to the SEAT icon.

Will the Little e601 become the new XXI century phenomenon, filling the streets as it happened between 1957-1973? Sorry to say that this is not the Little Electric Cars´ vision and strategy since the original plan is to build just 25 units, on request.

From a legal point of view, the Little e601 strictly meets the required homologation in terms of technical and safety characteristics. Furthermore, aesthetically speaking the new e601 keeps all the original SEAT 600 essence as its upholstery, seat belts, instrument panel, etc.

With respect to the Little e601 performance, the electric engine is placed in the rear side – as well as the SEAT 600 petrol engine – and will perform 20hp (potentially rising by up to 41hp), reaching up to 100km/h (approximately like the original SEAT 600) and a battery autonomy of 150km. Furthermore, just like the hybrid and electric vehicles, the Little e601 will incorporate a power regeneration system via slowdown or braking. Speaking about its battery system of 13.3 KwH, a fast charging connector would recharge its batteries up to 80% in two hours from the front part of the vehicle.

In my view, Little Electric Cars has had a great idea about electrifying a great idea in electrifying which became the favorite of Spanish people (25% of the total cars in Spain) during the ’60s and ’70s. A great engineering masterpiece. The only inconvenient that I could claim is the fact that this car will cease being the symbol of the mid-sized class because of its high price and low driving performance – only 150km of battery autonomy, besides the low levels of versatility, functionality, and space.

Nonetheless, these 25 units are so exclusive that most likely they will conquer the heart of collectors and classic cars lovers in general and SEAT 600 in particular. Moreover, the Little e601 will be well received by the electric mobility defenders, this is those interested players in environment-friendly mobility on board a classic car.

The Galician company took the first step to become the leader in the renovation of classic vehicles on demand and its subsequent transformation into electric vehicles. The Spanish firm has already gotten some interesting projects – as the electrification of a Porsche 911 for a customer from London.

What do you think about the e601? Would you like to get one of these 25 exclusive electric units of the SEAT 600?

Do you have or you´ve ever had a SEAT 600? Which experiences would you like to share with us?

What would you say about this kind of projects? Which car would you like to transform into an electric vehicle?

This is all for today, I hope you have enjoyed this news about the Little e601. Please, as always it would be a pleasure to see your comments, opinions, questions and/or any other suggestion you would like to make. Feel free to share it with all of us. I am convinced that you have some good curious or funny information!

See you soon motorsport fans! 😊
